We continued our studies on the Enlightenment philosophers, adding the first feminist, Mary Wollstonecraft, to the mix. We read an article and had a discussion about the Roots of the Enlightenment, and then we did a research activity on famous quotes and ideas of the philosophers. Use the internet to find out who said the quotes or ideas in the worksheets below.
Notes on the Enlightenment with 5 discussion journals. The journals were turned in for a grade.
We studied the specific thinkers that dominated the Scientific Revolution. Students took a mini-quiz upon entering the class that had 4 questions. We discussed the impact of the scientists, specifically Galileo and Newton. It's important to remember that many of the new ideas were opposite to what the Catholic Church was teaching. Students used the book to research the 12 scientists at the bottom of the note sheet from yesterday. We played a Kahoot Quiz game as a review. We watched a short video on Tycho Brahe, a very unconventional and fascinating astronomer.
We completed a chart activity and reading on absolutism and the monarchs of this time. The purpose was to show that they wanted total power, had minimum or no checks and balances, and claimed divine right (power from God). This was turned in for a grade. We started our lessons on the Scientific Revolution and did a real cool journal and discussion about the impact of inventions and how everything we have now, all of our favorite things, had to be built from earlier inventions and discoveries. We did a short note sheet with the causes of the Enlightenment and Scientific Revolution.
We did a pop up Monarch activity after completing a journal. We covered Philip of Spain and his armada, King Henry and his daughter Elizabeth, the Sun King Louis 14th and Versailles, and Peter the Great transforming Russia into a modern state.
We started our lessons on the Age of Absolutism. We learned how is started, who were the main players, and what they were trying to accomplish. We completed a journal, read an article and answered questions, and watched a short video clip. We discussed how the argument of "divine right" would work today.
All students are taking the Unit 3 Test. If you are absent then you must arrange to take it on Monday during lunch or in flex period.
We did a full review for our Unit 3 Test on GLOBAL CONNECTIONS. The study guide answers are attached below. 30 questions and two essays for academic students, and 35 questions and 3 essays for honors. First major grade of the new quarter. Please study.
We completed our Unit by doing a reading and summary on the Jesuit missionaries and their work converting natives to Christianity in the Americas, India, and China. Then, we took a big picture approach and retraced our steps from the beginning of this Unit, using short clips from the Mankind series to remind us of the cause and effect of history. The siege, and eventual conquering, of Constantinople by the Muslim Turks leads European nations to start exploring in an effort to find alternate trades routes. This has the Portuguese, led by Prince Henry the Navigator, to start exploring the coast of Africa. Eventually, Bartolomeo Diaz gets to the Cape of Good Hope (southern tip) and Vasco Da Gama eventually reaches India. The wealth gained from this trade route spurs an age of exploration, with Spain funding Christopher Columbus who inadvertently discovers two new continents (the Americas). This leads to great wealth, conquest of native peoples and the exchange of ideas, diseases, animals, technology, and crops. It also leads to mercantilism and colonization, piracy and competition, which brings us to the horrific slave trade. Mankind Episode 7 - Watch from 16 minutes to 32 minutes (2 sections) Mankind Episode 8 - Watch from beginning to 13th minute and then skip ahead to minute 22.
How did slavery affect the future of the United States? How did it affect the future of Africa. We talked about segregation and racism, the social issues of the U.S. and the destruction of Africa by imperialism. This led into our lesson on colonies and mercantilism, triangular trade, and the Middle Passage. We completed a note sheet on colonies and mercantilism and then did the section 4 and 5 reading quiz from the textbook.
Teacher Planning Day - No School - Students must complete the homework assignment on the slave trade.
We covered the TransAtlantic Slave Trade. We completed a journal, did a presentation, watched number of short clips on slavery, and were given a homework assignment to complete over the long weekend. Overview of the history of slavery
We spent today learning about the civilizations of the Maya and the Inca. The Mayans were decentralized and a loose collection of city-states that shared a common culture while the Inca were a well organized empire like the Romans. They built an amazing system of roads and bridges that linked their people and were less violent than the Aztecs and Mayans. Sadly, both fell victim to the global exploration and destruction from Spanish conquistadors. They left behind some amazing monuments like the pyramids at Chichen Itza and the city in the clouds called Maccu Picchu. We learned about the Mayans and how they were destroyed by the Spanish conquistadors, mostly by disease. We talked about the rich, vibrant culture and civilization that the Mayans created, despite being ultra violent and involving ritual sacrifice. Students were given the rest of the period to complete their project and turn it in. Aztec Video Clips
We finished our journal on Columbus and his holiday. Students had to decide if he was deserving of a holiday based on what we learned about his life. We started a new class project creating an explorers map and a representation of the Columbian Exchange. We will complete it tomorrow in class.
