We completed our Powerpoint activity on Imperialism by reading the Rudyard Kipling poem "White Man's Burden". We filled out the rest of the notes on the front side of the worksheet. We learned about two conflicts, one in China, and the other in India. The Sepoy Rebellion (or Mutiny) was when Indian troops, who were controlled by the British, got upset about pork and cow fat being used on new ammunition cartridges. This went against their religion and they took up arms and started killing British traders. Eventually, the British sent their own troops and took over India as a colony. The British forced the Indians to grow the poppy, which can be used to make opium. This leads to our next conflict, the China Opium Wars. Watch the videos linked below. We started two worksheets, one on the Sepoy Rebellion, and the other on map skills of Imperialism. Both will be completed in class tomorrow and turned in for a grade. Opium Wars in China - from History Channel
We continued learning about Imperialism, focusing on the scramble for Africa and King Leopold, and parts of Asia like India, Vietnam, and China. We went through a photo image analysis and deciphered from context clues. All the photos used are in the PowerPoint below. We introduced the concept of Imperialism and talked about the motivating factors. The industrialized nations of Europe, in competition with each other for prestige and natural resources, looked at the populations of Africa and Asia and decided to colonize and empire build. Nationalism, Social Darwinism, and a desire to spread religion led them to destroy the cultural heritage of about 1/3 of the world. We completed a mini-quiz, a journal, a reading with questions, and started some notes. We watched a short presentation explaining Imperialism.
We covered the Impact of the Industrial Revolution today. This includes conversations about child labor, urbanization, working conditions, tenements, inequality, and economic systems. We continued and completed our Urban Simulation for the Industrial Revolution. Students had a paragraph to write at the completion. I collected the inventors homework. Now people are living in cities, and they aren't healthy or safe. Life expectancy for poor city dwellers drops to 31 years of age. Children and women are now working long hours in dangerous jobs. The family structure has been totally upended. Pollution and unhealthy environments are rampant. This leads to a slew of new problems like child labor, cancer, inequality, and new social classes. We will look at the impact of the Industrial Revolution next.
We started an Urban Simulation that shows the growth of cities during throughout the Industrial Revolution. You will need to use a large piece of paper and follow the directions as we go through history, inventions, advancements, and changes to the very fabric of the way we lived and society. Everything changed for Europe and the USA during this time period, from rural living to urban environments.

We also learned about Adam Smith, the famed economist who created Laissez Faire capitalism (meaning HANDS OFF) which says the invisible hand of the market will set prices and supply and demand.
