It's all about exploration and Christopher Columbus. Was he a hero or a villain, a brilliant explorer or a lucky fool? How should we remember him and his accomplishments and what are the real facts about his life and achievements? We did a journal to start our classwork and completed half the notes for exploration. We wrapped up a lot of loose ends and watched clips and discussed topics including: Marco Polo, invention and use of guns in China, the Renaissance, and the Reformation. Students had to turn in the work for the week which included three papers: Renaissance Reading Check and Mini-Quiz, Reformation Notes and Chart, and Reformation drawing activity. If you were absent please place it in the box. We completed the notes, chart, worksheet, and reading that we began yesterday, all regarding the Reformation. We learned about the creation of the Anglican Church and King Henry VIII. Check the post from Wednesday for attachments and see the reading and quiz below.
We started learning about the Protestant Reformation. We listened to a rap song called 95 Theses. We started taking notes and did half of a comic activity. We watched two video clips about the church and Martin Luther. Nothing was turned in today.
We did a classroom art gallery activity where each student had to find 3 different unique pieces of artwork (painting, sculpture, etchings, etc.) and describe and explain what they feel seeing it. This is an exploration of both Italian and Renaissance art. The assignment is listed below and was turned in for a grade.
We started a new Unit and focused on the transition from the Middle Ages into the Renaissance. We went through the notes for this section and completed two section summaries on notebook paper. That wasn't turned in as we are going to add on to it and it will be checked for a classwork grade at the end of the week.
All students took the Unit 2 Test. If you were absent then you will make it up Monday or Tuesday. Be prepared.
Today is test review day. All students got a review sheet and we went over the answers. We played a Mr. Potato Head review game. Test is Friday. 45 questions and 2 essay questions for academic, and 50 questions and four essay questions for honors. The review sheet, with answers, is attached below. Please study. We completed our last two topics before the test. We started with a lesson on GUILDS and how they sprung up in newly populated towns and villages at the end of feudalism. They were professional associations, similar to unions in our modern world. The second half of class was about feudal Japan and the samurai. We talked about Bushido and the code of honor they lived under. We did a worksheet reading in complete sentences for both guilds and samurai. Samurai History Bushido Seppukku (Ritual Suicide)
We covered two main topics today, Marco Polo's relationship to the Mongol Empire and Europe, and Akbar the Great of the Mughal Empire. We did a review reading and quiz activity that was turned in for a grade. It was about the Plague. We also checked out the Taj Mahal, which is considered to be one of the greatest buildings on the planet and is an example of blended Mughal architecture. Genghis Khan, the Mongols, and the PLAGUE. We used the Mankind Video to trace the plague from the Mongolian Empire of Asia into Europe, causing devastation and destruction. We continued the Middle Ages packet we started yesterday. We covered the Magna Carta, Joan of Arc, and the Hundred Year War. Watch the short video clips and finish the packet questions. Their is a second drawing activity that each student must complete. Honors students have to write a summary on the back. Your project is DUE MONDAY.
We learned about the Crusades today. We read some primary source documents and analyzed the bias contained in them. We talked about atrocities and the promise of heaven for anyone who joined the Crusades. We watched some video clips and finished the notes on the Byzantine Empire and Crusades. All info is below.
We completed our lesson on Charlemagne by watching a short video and reading an article with questions. We moved on to the notes on the Byzantine Empire, Emperor Justinian, and the schism in the Church that ends with a split into the Greek Orthodox Church.
