We introduced the philosophes of the Enlightenment and looked at the connections between their ideas and American ideals. These ideas are the ingredients that make up the America that hasn't been created yet. We went through the progression of ideas that started with absolute monarchy and ended at a democratic government with an elected leader, 3 branches of government, guaranteed rights, and separation of powers. We took notes and started a quotes worksheet where students had to identify ideas and sayings by the influential philosophes of the time period.
