We learned about two conflicts, one in China, and the other in India. Eventually, the British sent their own troops and took over India as a colony. The British forced the Indians to grow the poppy, which can be used to make opium. This leads to our next conflict, the China Opium Wars. Watch the video linked below. We introduced the concept of Imperialism and talked about the motivating factors. The industrialized nations of Europe, in competition with each other for prestige and natural resources, looked at the populations of Africa and Asia and decided to colonize and empire build. Nationalism, Social Darwinism, and a desire to spread religion led them to destroy the cultural heritage of about 1/3 of the world. We started some notes, and did a reading with questions. Use two examples from the urban simulation drawing.
