We introduced the concept of Imperialism and talked about the motivating factors. The industrialized nations of Europe, in competition with each other for prestige and natural resources, looked at the populations of Africa and Asia and decided to colonize and empire build. Nationalism, Social Darwinism, and a desire to spread religion led them to destroy the cultural heritage of about 1/3 of the world. We started some notes, and did a reading with questions.
