We studied the specific thinkers that dominated the Scientific Revolution. We discussed the impact of the scientists, specifically Galileo and Newton. It's important to remember that many of the new ideas were opposite to what the Catholic Church was teaching. Students used the book to research the 12 scientists at the bottom of the note sheet. We watched a short video on Tycho Brahe, a very unconventional and fascinating astronomer. Alchemy and the Scientific Revolution Scientific Method Rap - use "richmondcps" as login and password
We are doing an extension activity about slavery today. Students will play a game as Lucy King, a 14 year old slave girl in Kentucky. Students will have to make intelligent choices, that change based on the player, to help her escape to freedom. They will learn about the realities of slavery, and the difficulties in escaping. They will see who was fighting to help escaped slaves, and who was trying to catch them. They will see the Underground Railroad in action and, ultimately, choose where Lucy ends up. They will make mistakes and be captured, and possibly be killed, but they will learn about the struggle.

How did slavery affect the future of the United States? How did it affect the future of Africa. We talked about segregation and racism, the social issues of the U.S. and the destruction of Africa by imperialism. This led into our lesson on colonies and mercantilism, triangular trade, and the Middle Passage. We completed a note sheet on colonies and mercantilism and then did the section 4 and 5 reading quiz from the textbook. Flocabulary Conquistadors Rap - use "richmondcps" as login and password

It's all about the civilizations in MesoAmerica and how the "discovery" of these two new continents leads to the destruction of the native cultures. We covered the Aztecs, Mayans, and Incans, and discussed how conquistadors used diseases and superior weaponry to take over South and Central America. We worked on our Columbian Exchange project the whole period. use the link below to get the information for the project.
Columbian Exchange We completed our lessons on the Age of Exploration by focusing on the role of Christopher Columbus. He was a horrible human being that murdered, raped, mutilated, and enslaved the natives he met. While he is credited with "discovering" the Americas, and even afforded a national holiday, he can be judged quite harshly even by t he standards of the time period he lived. We did two more definitions (Prince Henry and Vasco de Gama). We watched some video clips and discussed whether having a holiday for Columbus was appropriate.
