We started an Urban Simulation that shows the growth of cities during throughout the Industrial Revolution. You will need to use a large piece of paper and follow the directions as we go through history, inventions, advancements, and changes to the very fabric of the way we lived and society. Everything changed for Europe and the USA during this time period, from rural living to urban environments.

We started a new Unit today. We introduced the Industrial Revolution, which brought upon a profound change in the way people lived, how society was ordered, and set the stage for military conflicts in the future. The countries that industrialized first gained immense wealth and power. We went through some notes and a PowerPoint, a journal, and listed to a song and two videos about the time period. We learned about the Latin American Revolutions today. In 1800 almost all of Central and South America was under Spanish rule. Starting with a slave revolt in Haiti, led by Toussaint L'Ouverture, over the next 30 years the entire continent is transformed to independent governments. Men like Simon Bolivar, Jose de San Martin, and Miguel Hidalgo led the fight in freeing countries from colonial oppression. Simon Bolivar Brainpop - login and password "leecs"
We finished up learning about the French Revolution, speaking about Napoleon becoming Emperor, the changes he made (Napoleonic Code) and his eventual defeat at Waterloo. This leads to the Congress of Vienna, where the map of Europe is redrawn. We also learned about Adam Smith, the famed economist who created Laissez Faire capitalism (meaning HANDS OFF) which says the invisible hand of the market will set prices and supply and demand. French Revolution Day - We learned about the origins of the French Revolution: poor leadership, bad debt, failed crops, and inequality between the Estates. We took a lot of notes today. We listened to some songs to help explain what happened. We watched a couple of short video clips that are below. We learned about the American Revolution today. We read two articles, listened to a number of songs, and answered some questions. Projects due Thursday, and test on Friday.
We are working on our Musically Enlightened Project today. All the directions and necessary paperwork is attached below. The project is due next Thursday, the day BEFORE the test. We also started reviewing for the test by answering some of the Study Guide questions.
We introduced the philosophes of the Enlightenment and how looked at the connections between their ideas and American ideals. We took notes and started a quotes worksheet where students had to identify ideas and sayings by the influential philosophes of the time period.
We did a pop up Monarch activity after completing a journal. We covered Philip of Spain and his armada, King Henry and his daughter Elizabeth, the Sun King Louis 14th and Versailles, and Peter the Great transforming Russia into a modern state.
