We completed our lessons on the Age of Exploration by focusing on the role of Christopher Columbus. He was a horrible human being that murdered, raped, mutilated, and enslaved the natives he met. While he is credited with "discovering" the Americas, and even afforded a national holiday, he can be judged quite harshly even by the standards of the time period he lived. We did two more definitions (Prince Henry and Vasco de Gama). We watched some video clips and discussed whether having a holiday for Columbus was appropriate.
Columbus did open the floodgates for a lot of things to be shared between the Old and New Worlds. We worked on our Columbian Exchange project the whole period. Use the link below to get the information for the project.
