We completed our lessons on the Age of Exploration by focusing on the role of Christopher Columbus. He was a horrible human being that murdered, raped, mutilated, and enslaved the natives he met. While he is credited with "discovering" the Americas, and even afforded a national holiday, he can be judged quite harshly even by t he standards of the time period he lived. We did two more definitions (Prince Henry and Vasco de Gama). We watched some video clips and discussed whether having a holiday for Columbus was appropriate. Columbus did open the floodgates for a lot of things to be shared between the Old and New Worlds. We worked on our Columbian Exchange project the whole period.
