We studied the African Kingdoms of the Middle Ages. We talked about Nubia, Axum, Ghana, Mali, and Songhai. We focused on Mansa Musa and his journey to Mecca, which literally put his kingdom on European Maps. The main source of wealth was gold and salt. His empire was Islamic, but he was tolerant of other faiths. He built many famous mosques, including the Djenne Mosque in Timbuktu (a great center of learning.)
