We completed our discovery into what North Korea is like, and that the only Americans to have a diplomatic meeting with Kim Jong Un is Dennis Rodman and some Harlem Globetrotters. We discussed the fear of nuclear war and compared the free people of South Korea with the Communist dictator of North Korea. This is a result of a Cold War battle from 60 years ago. Then, we shifted into talking about apartheid, Nelson Mandela, and how a country can heal itself from years of racism and colonialism. We see this play out in India, South Africa, and even the United States.
We started watching the video "Invictus", after reading the poem of the same name. It's a movie about using sports to bring a country together after some of the worst racial segregation and strife the world has ever known. Students have an assignment of questions to answer during the video.
