We completed our Powerpoint activity on Imperialism and completed our map activity. We filled out the rest of the notes on the front side of the worksheet. We learned about two conflicts, one in China, and the other in India. Eventually, the British sent their own troops and took over India as a colony. The British forced the Indians to grow the poppy, which can be used to make opium. This leads to our next conflict, the China Opium Wars. Watch the video linked below.
Opium Wars in China - from History Channel
We continued learning about Imperialism, focusing on the scramble for Africa and King Leopold, and parts of Asia like India, Vietnam, and China. We went through a photo image analysis and deciphered from context clues. All the photos used are in the PowerPoint below. We watched a 10 minute clip from Mankind:Speed, where we saw how the invention of rubber by Charles Goodyear led to the brutalization of Central Africa for rubber trees (26 minute mark to 35 minute mark).
We introduced the concept of Imperialism and talked about the motivating factors. The industrialized nations of Europe, in competition with each other for prestige and natural resources, looked at the populations of Africa and Asia and decided to colonize and empire build. Nationalism, Social Darwinism, and a desire to spread religion led them to destroy the cultural heritage of about 1/3 of the world. We started some notes, and did a reading with questions. We watched a short presentation explaining Imperialism.

We covered Nationalism, or the pride in one's country based on cultural similarities. This feeling of togetherness and pride leads to war, especially among industrialized nations.
We covered the Impact of the Industrial Revolution today. This includes conversations about child labor, urbanization, working conditions, tenements, inequality, and economic systems. We went through a presentation and completed a worksheet with stations.
History of Mankind - Revolutions (start at 46th minute)
We continued and completed our Urban Simulation for the Industrial Revolution. Students had a paragraph to write at the completion. Now people are living in cities, and they aren't healthy or safe. Life expectancy for poor city dwellers drops to 31 years of age. Children and women are now working long hours in dangerous jobs. The family structure has been totally upended. Pollution and unhealthy environments are rampant. This leads to a slew of new problems like child labor, cancer, inequality, and new social classes. We will look at the impact of the Industrial Revolution next.
