The second half of class was spent on the review sheet for the final exam.
We completed our summaries on the Rwandan genocide and turned them in. We discussed the threat of global warming and pollution and explained greenhouse gasses and the increase since the Industrial Revolution.
Genocide is the planned and systematic destruction of an entire race, ethnicity, or religion. After the Holocaust and the killing of 7 million Jews we vowed "NEVER AGAIN." Despite that, genocides have occurred on almost every continent since then. We focused on Rwanda and the 800,000 Tutsi tribesman that were killed in 100 days.
We wrapped up the conflicts of the Cold War by talking about the Korean and Vietnam War. We shifted focus to talk about the decolonization of the world, specifically India and South Africa. We discussed the concept of great leaders and non-violent civil disobedience and protest with Gandhi and Nelson Mandela.

After WW2, The USSR and the United States were the worlds only remaining superpowers. They were opposites, with the U.S. touting democracy, freedom, and capitalism, and the USSR trying to spread Communism and socialism. The next 45 years will be known as the Cold War, and will have battlefields all over the globe, although the two countries never went to war against each other. This was a war for the minds of the people of the world and included an arms race, space race, Korean War, Berlin Wall, Vietnam War, Afghanistan War, and even conflict in sports. Ultimately, Communism failed and in 1991 the Soviet Union broke up.
We discussed propaganda and how fascist dictators like Hitler and Mussolini used it to take total control of their countries and place the blame on small groups. We did a timeline of WW2 and answered 10 questions. We started a cool video overview of WW2 done from space. The video is linked below from YouTube. We had questions that went along with the video. We will finish it tomorrow and the worksheet will be turned in for a grade.
